Where academia and architecture meet

Noteworthy for: Being the fourth oldest university in the English-speaking world.

Word to the wise: If you have the inclination and the stomach for it, stop by the fascinating Anatomy Museum. Visits are by appointment only so be sure to call in advance.

The previous stomping ground of seven Nobel laureates and illustrious names such as Joseph Lister, John Logie Baird and James Watt, the neo-gothic stylings of the University of Glasgow are unmissable for any visitor to the city. Designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott and home to the impressive Hunterian Museum, the imposing tower of the main building juts into the city's skyline, boasting unparalleled views over Kelvingrove Park and the west of the city.

It doesn't cost a thing to stroll through the cloistered courtyard of the main building, alive with students during term time giving visitors the chance to brush shoulders with potential innovators, neurosurgeons and the future unemployed. But if you'd like a little more informed insight into the history of the University, the Student Representative Council offer guided tours at 2pm from Thursday - Sunday. These depart from the University Visitor Centre, with tickets available for purchase from SRC Reception in the John McIntyre Building or direct from the Tour Guide.
