Noteworthy for: A heated rivalry rages delectably between two long-established and beloved bakeries--Mike's Pastry and Modern Bakery. Only a minute's walk separates them.
Word to the wise: Both bakeries make their cannolis fresh on the premises, though only Modern fills shells upon order. But Mike’s is so popular that the cannolis don’t rest long on the shelf.
Originally Sicilian, cannolis now represent the most obscenely decadent of Italian pastries. Cannoli virgins may be intimidated by the tubes of fried dough, brimming with creamy ricotta from both ends. But done right, the filling tastes luscious and light, and the shell that wraps around to contain its whipped frenzy is never soggy.
Mike's is the better-known joint – touristy to some, iconic to others. Supposedly, Modern is where the locals buy, but now that tourists have gotten wind, the reverse may be true instead. Sample both, join the fray, and claim a side. Or better yet, play neutral and enjoy the bounty of both.
