Beirut - See & Do

The National Museum

The principal museum of archeology in Lebanon with over 100,000 objects

Noteworthy for: The entire museum had to be re-done since years of war and turmoil affected the museum's structure and artifacts.

The National Museum suffered a harsh blow during the war, and was basically shut down for more than two decades. Several artifacts and monuments were destroyed by militias, inappropriate conditions and destruction of the building itself. Being located on the “Green Line," it had a front row ticket to the fighting.

In 1995, a massive project took place aiming to restore the museum to its old grandeur. The mission was successful and today, the National Museum in Beirut is one of the most important museums of the Middle East. It hosts a vast collection of weapons, Phoenician statuettes, jewelery, coins, mosaics, and sarcophagi. An interesting film on the restoration of the museum is shown every hour from 9am - 4pm in the Audiovisual room.
