Comprehensive exhibition of 5,000 years of violence

Word to the wise: Travel here by subway. Step on line 1 and get off at the station usefully named 'Military Museum'.

Beijing's Military Museum documents China's military ancestry from the time of the first Emperor to present day.

All the major wars are represented among the exhibits which contain everything from huge tanks and fighter planes to full-scale copies of the Emperor's human catapults. Photographs, propaganda paintings, military philosophy and statistics further illustrate the historical impact of each war and the suffering it brought upon the Chinese people.

Despite most of the installation descriptions being in English, there are actually few tourists who come here, which is a pity since the museum provides an effective insight into how much violence the Chinese people have endured throughout history and how proud they are of their now unified and independent China.
