Independent hire or guided tours, the ultimate way to explore Amsterdam like a local

Word to the wise: It's vital that if you're hiring a bike to cycle alone, you are fully aware of all the traffic rules and regulations for cyclists.

Bikes are an intrinsic part of Amsterdam life, and you'll see locals riding through the narrow streets and over bridges at all hours. There are plenty of places from which to hire a bike around Central Station, but cycling through Amsterdam is not for the faint-hearted. You'll be issued guidelines when you rent your bike, so do read them thoroughly, because once you master the dos and don'ts, cycling through Amsterdam is most definitely one of the top things to do while visiting the city, and nothing is guaranteed to make you feel more like a local, than gliding along the canals under your own steam.

If you're not confident enough to go it alone, most companies do guided tours. MacBike offer a great two hour City Bike Tour, taking in windmills, breweries, bridges and all the major sights, and is a good way to get your bearings if you've just arrived in Amsterdam.
