The Liwa Desert
Seeing the desert landscape is an adventure you'll never forget
Word to the wise: The Liwa Desert is about an hour outside of Abu Dhabi, but it's well worth the trip to see the awe-inspiring landscape, especially at sunset.
The best tip for the Liwa Desert is to go there overnight and camp close to the dunes. You'll get to watch the sunset and the sunrise, and feel the power of the silence and nature surrounding you. Make sure you go with either a recommended tour operator, or with at least 2 4x4 cars in case one of you gets stuck.
Enjoy the colors, the silence and the amazing feeling of freedom when surrounded by some of the highest sand dunes in the world. Liwa lies in the area of Empty Quarter, and the Moreeb dune (over 300m high) is the highest in the world. If you don't want to tough it out camping, there are also some spectacular hotels and resorts out in Liwa, for example the newly opened Anantara Qasr al Sarab Resort.
For tour arranged desert safaris contact either Cyclone Tours or check with the concierge of your hotels for other operators.
